On 16th April, 1915, the 2nd Gloucestershire battalion of 81 Brigade, 27th Division moved into trenches in and around Sanctuary Wood in the Ypres salient where they remained for the rest of the month. This period spent in the trenches coincided with the German attack in the northern part of the salient, which became known as Second Battle of Ypres and when they used gas for the first time. Although 2nd Gloucestershire was not directly involved in the fighting associated with this battle, the whole of the salient became much more active, especially the artillery war and no more so than on 17th April when Samuel Dixon was killed.
